The ALA is a charter school; any student who meets the enrollment requirements can apply, regardless of whether or not they are Community member or Native American. Students must be between the ages of 16 and 21 and must be

  • (A) at least 8 credits behind their graduation cohort, or
  • (B) 3 credits behind in math and science combined, or
  • (C) are 5th year seniors and beyond.

ALA Principal Barb Wilkinson said the ALA offers small class sizes, a mixture of live and online courses, and support to help you beyond graduation, such as finding a job and/or continuing with school. Wilkinson said the ALA offers a variety of elective options, such as Native American studies, with an emphasis in O’odham and Piipaash languages and cultures.

The ALA’s first-ever graduate, Safe Schools and Security Manager Esteban Lopez, said it was important for him to obtain his high school diploma. Lopez said he went to five different schools before attending the ALA and had to overcome many challenges. Lopez said he appreciated that the ALA was not a traditional high school and offered him flexibility. He said once he graduated, he was able to find work right away, and his experience at the ALA pushed him to attend college.

Looking back, Esteban said he wished he had attended the ALA sooner. Esteban offers this advice to today’s students: “Show up and do your work. Believe in yourself. Believe in your success.”

The ALA is located in the Community at 4827 N. Country Club Drive. For more information, contact ALA Principal Barb Wilkinson at [email protected] or call the ALA front office at 480-362-2130. Click here to find our online enrollment forms.
