Internships

The Accelerated Learning Academy (ALA) internship program offers an opportunity for students to receive credit toward graduation by duties performed and hours worked through on the job training/experience. Additionally, this allows students to explore various career opportunities within Salt River Schools and gain work experience. The internship plan is a mutually agreed upon guide among the student/learner, the mentor, and the ALA. Targeted experience/skillset development may include communication, collaboration, thinking and innovation, decision-making, professionalism, initiative and self-direction, organization, ethics, finance, and various tasks, which contribute to individual/common/department goals of Salt River Schools.

ALA students will gain practical skills, work with mentors, and experience exciting real-world projects to prepare for future opportunities in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and beyond! Age 16 years +  Able to work 10-15 hours/week  120 hours = 0.5 graduation credit   Be in good standing (academics, attendance, behavior)

Education Communications & Public Relations Internship

The Education Communications & Public Relations Internship (“comms intern”) is full of immersive professional learning opportunities, networking opportunities, and skill development. The comms intern will experience the day-to-day life of a marketing and public relations team member. The internship will provide students with fundamentals in journalistic writing, public speaking, and multimedia, while also exposing them to a professional work environment and mentorship at Salt River Schools.
As a comms intern, students will learn basic and advanced skills in photography, video, and audio. They will also cover events at Salt River Schools and publish their edited work on our official websites and social media pages, which can be used to build the student’s resume and/or portfolio. As students continue with the internship, they will have the opportunity to learn website design and management, event promotion and family engagement strategies, and craft feature stories to submit to partner news agencies.

Depending on the student’s interests, the scope of the internship can be narrowed or broadened to include:
• Website Design, Editing & Management
• Adobe Photoshop, In-Design, and Premiere 101
• DSLR Photography, Videography, including all A/V accessories
• Smartphone-related Photo/Video Learning
• Review Media Ethics (e.g., consent)
• Social Media Best Practices
• Shadowing teachers in the classroom; work with students/families to learn confidentiality.
• Brand Standards and Procedures
• Learning the role of tribal sovereignty in school communications, and how that merges/deviates from state/federal laws and requirements.
• Customer Service 101
• Event planning, promotion, execution, and coverage.
• Observe staff leadership meetings, board meetings, Council meetings, etc.
• Observe and learn organizational policies and procedure structure.

The internship is not limited to the categories listed above. School communications is an exciting and growing field! Additional job tasks and duties can be offered to the intern based upon skills and interests.
